What the hell’s a life coach?

It's a term that is being thrown around the internet a LOT at the moment. Everyone and their mum is becoming a life coach. Okay, so maybe not my mum, but ANYWAY. It's not like becoming a doctor, where you have to go to university for a very long time and get a degree. The coaching industry in the UK remains largely unregulated. Anyone can do it. Not necessarily well, but they can do it all the same.

You don't need to have qualifications to set up shop. For some clients, their coach must have them, for others, it's less important. I have chosen to become qualified through The Coaching Academy. It was important for me to have enough knowledge to help my clients in their journey - and also I love learning!

At different times in your life, you may need to call on different support systems to work with. Some may be healthcare professionals like therapists, counsellors, or psychologists. Others might be mentors, consultants, or life coaches. Let it be clear - life coaches are not healthcare professionals. Life coaches are future-focused and the sessions that take place are based around taking action, not just talking. It's about the 'how' you can get towards a goal, not necessarily 'why' you can't get there.

I’m an overwhelm and burnout prevention coach. As someone who has suffered with both of those things and a breakdown I know it’s not a good place to be. I believe that by taking proactive steps to move away from those types of situations, getting comfortable setting boundaries and deciding what success looks like to you, it’s possible to move away from feeling overwhelmed and frazzled in your everyday life.

A life coach is someone who can help you achieve your goals, overcome obstacles that may be in your way, and help you get where you want to be. It's your journey - but we're there beside you, holding the map - if that makes sense.

You might be feeling overwhelmed or frazzled in a particular area in your life (or just generally) and need some help to move away from that. You might want to make a change to stop you feeling that way, but you’re not sure where to start. Essentially if you have something you want to work on in your life, then that's where a life coach can come in!

As a coach, I won't tell you what to do, or very rarely give advice. If I was practicing a purist coaching approach, then there would be no advice at all. But I feel more comfortable in a semi-hybrid approach to coaching. So sometimes, I'll let you know, with your permission, what I would do. But ultimately, it's up to you.
